I know that the elections have been over for a while, but I wanted to ask for opinions concerning one of the signs displayed in Dana. The poster said something along the lines of vote for us we’re ethnic. The students who made the poster were a white girl and a black male, while the opposition was two white students. I talked to some students on campus and some said that they were very offended but a few thought it was funny. After seeing this poster I realized that most of the pairs running for office were very diverse. Does this diversity give the candidates an advantage? Do you think these students were exploiting their diversity in order to gain votes? Were their methods appropriate?
President Obama walks fine line on race, justice

They were certainly using their ethnicity as a marketable quality. They were in essence selling their race to the public. This happens all the time, companies using ethic groups to sell a product. It is quite similar to fashion agencies using certain looks to sell clothing etc. Its morality-questionable. Its effectiveness-absolute.
ReplyDeleteAlthough i didn't happen to see this specific sign, if I understand it correctly then I am disappointed by this exploitation of ethnicity. In using one's ethnicity as a tool for election, that person is implying that ethnicity somehow qualifies a person for a specific office. In my opinion, if you say "vote for me, i'm ethnic" then you shouldn't be offended if someone else says "don't vote for that person because they're ethnic".
ReplyDeleteJust my two cents.
I did not explicitly see this sign either, but I feel like they definitely used their race as an advantage to show that biracial couples are different from everyone else running for the position, therefore they should be voted in. Ethnicity is a quality that people use all the time to sell a product, so though it may be offensive, it sells themselves to Colby College.
