I thought this starbucks commercial was really interesting. There is a really something interesting about what races/ethnicities should and shouldn't mix. I am not sure why they would chose to make an ad like this-- maybe because its the kind of ridiculous that makes you laugh but shouldnt because its not PC at all.

I'm interested in hearing what other people think about this.

I think that the commercial suggests an inability for certain cultures to mix. Irish traditions are very specific to Irish culture and seeing any other race in a kilt with bagpipes seems contradictory. However, I am a little confused why Starbust, a candy with only 4 flavors, is a bunch of contradictions. The commercial is definitely trying to be funny and I don’t think intends to make a statement about race, but I do think that it displays a division of cultures and ones inability to understand mixing cultures.
ReplyDeleteI think the commercial is saying that Starbursts are a contradiction because they claim to be a liquid and a solid. I guess it is just a fancy way of saying that they're juicy.
ReplyDeleteI doubt that Starburst meant to address racial issues with this commercial. I believe it was another one of those really strange and somewhat funny Starburst commercials that was trying to attest to the "juiciness." The part where they point out the albino lifeguard show that the commercial was not racially motivated. Regardless of the intent, using a Scotch-Korean for a humorous effect does say that, like Stefanie and Erica said, some people think that certain races/ethnicities don't mix well and are contradictions.
