A Place for the 'Conversation on Race'

While still a senator, now President Barack Obama called for a nation-wide conversation on race. Let this small sliver of the internet be one of the places where that discussion can take place.

This blog is for the use of students in Dr. Moore's spring, 2010 "Philosophical Perspectives on Race" course at Colby College. Only students enrolled in the course may post and comment on this site. Onlookers, however, are more than welcome.

A few groundrules are in order:

1. Everything you post here is public. Do not post something if you do not want the entire internet world to be able to read it. To that end, you may use a pseudonym for your posts if you'd like; just be sure it is something inoffensive and email me with that name, so I can keep track of your posts for grading purposes.

2. You, the students of this class, are the writers. I, the instructor, am the editor. Consider this forum the same as a conversation you'd have in class.  That means you need to be respectful, courteous, and THOUGHTFUL in what you say.  Critique is essential; hostile or misinformed remarks, however, are counterproductive.  I retain the right to reject or delete any posts/comments that are inappropriate for the blog. Please see A Blogger's Code of Ethics and Weblog Ethics for excellent reviews of what it takes to be a responsible blogger.

3. Take this as an opportunity to share links, comments about class discussions and readings, and thoughts you have about the issues we're thinking about. While there is a requirement for posting and commenting, students are expected to exceed that requirement on a regular basis. Subscribe to the site's RSS feed, check it regularly (every other day at least), and make this blog your own!

Welcome!
